Sport

Physical Education is the key to every aspect of a child’s development and should be as enjoyable and as inspiring as possible. We are constantly striving to give our pupils the best opportunities to take part in as many sports as possible to the highest standard achievable. The Department is led by two full time specialists in addition to a team of professional coaches who assist in the delivery of a wide variety of additional activities which include traditional sports as well Aerobics and Zumba.

The Sports facilities consist of an All Weather Astro Turf, Athletics Track [grass], newly refurbished indoor Swimming Pool and a Sports Hall with a dedicated area for Trampolining and Fitness. The Fitness Room includes Cardio Vascular Equipment and Technology used in the assessment of Elite Fitness Training Programmes. The Sports Hall has facilities for Tennis, Badminton, Netball, Football, Basketball and Volleyball. The newly resurfaced Outdoor Tennis and Netball Courts give opportunities to play all year round.

Fixtures play a pivotal role within the Department. Senior School fixtures take place on a Wednesday and Saturday, respectively and consist of Hockey, Netball, Football, Cross Country, Tennis, Swimming, Rounders and Athletics. Additional Fixtures are organised during the school week outside these times, time permitting and are held against local State and Independent Schools within the Midlands Region. Teams compete in local District Leagues, Tournaments and Competitions.  Students also participate in Cross Country and Athletics at District, County, Regional and National Level at English Schools.  In addition, senior girls also represent Derbyshire and Staffordshire Hockey and Netball teams and go on to represent Regional teams. Our Swimming Teams have also performed at the National Swimming Finals at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, Preparatory Schools’ and Inter School Swimming Galas. The Tennis Teams successfully compete at regional  level. Regular squad training takes place during term time and includes girls both in Senior School and Roch House. Trips to Wimbledon and Girls School Association Conferences are an annual occurrence. Sports tours are also an additional feature.

A Level, GCSE and BTEC are all offered to examination level in which the Department holds 100% record with excellent ‘value added’. Pupils can also follow GCSE and the Juniors Sports Leaders Award which is a vocational award in parallel.

In the Prep School pupils have games, swimming and gym/dance through the course of a week and, in addition, have many opportunities for extra activities through our extensive Enrichment Programme. Our recently refurbished swimming pool is a fantastic facility and enables all of the pupils aged from 3 to 11 swim each week. We have a netball team which competes regularly in the Staffordshire Under 11 League as well as in local and regional tournaments. We also have a series of competitive House events during the year which enables a wider group of pupils to experience healthy competition. The Enrichment Programme allows for additional activities such as pop lacrosse, trampolining, dodgeball, football, cricket and also supports various team squads such as netball, swimming, hockey, athletics, rounders and cross-country. Children have opportunities to represent the school in many sports through fixtures with other schools.

The Department has recently developed Trampolining and Football and plans to introduce new activities such as Sailing and Golf.
