Pupils are introduced to the EFL teaching team within the first few days of arrival, informal discussions with the teachers then take place and pupils are helped to settle into the new education system. A placement test is taken in order to establish exact level of English on the Common European Framework of Reference, as used by the Cambridge ESOL examinations board.

At this point, a personal timetable will be formulated according to the pupil’s needs. The EFL team makes every effort to integrate pupils into school life – they will participate in core curriculum subjects and will also have the opportunity to be involved in our extensive extra-curricular activities. Our dedicated and experienced EFL teachers communicate their love and passion for the English language to their pupils in interesting, lively and varied ways using a wide range of approaches and media including course books, audio-visual aids, games, role play and Information and Communication Technology.

Lessons take place in small groups or pairs and occasionally, one-to-one lessons will be incorporated into pupils’ timetables. Pupils may, if they or their parents wish, work towards a Cambridge KET, PET, FCE or IELTS examination, which will be taken locally. Younger learners between the ages of 8 and 12 can follow the Cambridge Young Learners’ English Programme.

Overseas pupils are asked always to speak English during school hours and all lessons are delivered in English, regardless of their level. As a result, as the school year progresses and their English Language skills improve, they naturally become more and more integrated into school life and require less EAL tuition. Support from the EAL team will of course always be available to pupils, but it will now be provided in the environment of mainstream education. UK independent schools are known world-wide for their excellence.

In attending Abbots Bromley School, pupils not only benefit from one of the best educational experiences, but also become confident and proficient in their use of the English Language, opening them up to a wide range of business and commerce opportunities in the future.

Please Note: If an Overseas pupil joins an established English-language class, for example year 7, 8 or 9 General English, or Year 10 or 11 IGCSE English, the cost of tuition will be included in the Academic fees. The first year of a 3-year Sixth Form course (in ABIC) is also included: further group study in the Sixth Form is also included. However, if parents wish their child to have individual tuition such as preparation for an ESOL examination extra charges will apply: please contact the School for this information.
